There is a distributor road route planned for the town of Athy that terrifies us. We should not be afraid of a road. But we are. The proposed route “C1” runs through our playing pitches, cutting a nasty looking gash across a map. The dark corridor hovers over the sketched out green fields below, showing the line of what will be lost. But this is where the children of Athy run and play, laugh and learn. It is where the falls are few and cushioned with the certainty of a helping hand, and the support of their community. They grow up here learning the lessons that will sustain them in their lives to come and help them to grow as better members of Athy’s Community.
The Clubs and Volunteers of Athy dedicate ourselves to teaching the children of the town how to play with honour, how to win, and how to lose. We dedicate ourselves, our time and effort to nurturing the growth of these children to be the best that they can be and see this as an essential first step towards making Athy the best Community that it can be.
We ask for little in return and are sincerely appreciative of having some of the best pitches that our country has to offer, with flat land and good drainage. Some sun would be nice but we will work without it.
We are not just members of a Sports Club, we are members of a Community and see our work within that context as good people make good Communities. We also passionately want a new road, we’re part of the traffic on Leinster street too. But what we really want is the opportunity to continue to facilitate the town to grow, by helping it’s young people to grow.
We, the town, need and deserve a road worthy of Athy. Not one that denies our children an opportunity but gives them a town where amenities such as sports and transportation are developed side by side and not one in the shadow of the other. Are we voices in the dark or will others in the Community who feel like us rise up and let their voices be heard?
What Effect Will This Have ??
The selection of “Route C1” will mean that we will lose the equivalent of 2 full Pitches, i.e. 66% of our Training Area.
This will limit the number of Young Players and Underage Teams which we can accommodate, meaning that we will have to undo all of the good work that has been done in recent years to get the Children of Athy active.
This cannot be allowed to happen
If you feel strongly about saving your community please contact Kildare County Council and voice your concerns over route C1 before the 11th of December 2015.
This will take approx. 5 – 10 minutes and can be done either by:-
