James Fitzgerald

James began refereeing in 2003 on the suggestion of Athy’s then youth director Keith Meredith and within two seasons was officiating in the All-Ireland League. He moved for work to Dubai in 2006 and, in 2008, was appointed to the IRB Asia International Panel. Between 2008-11, he refereed 11 Tests and was AR for a further 25. He was also appointed to 14 World Rugby Sevens Series events as AR, and the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2009. In 2010, he refereed the final of the World University Games in Portugal. He returned to Ireland in 2012 and resumed refereeing in Leinster, all the time proudly representing Athy RFC. In 2018, he moved to Canada to take a job at the World Anti-Doping Agency, and he continues to referee every Saturday during the season.
